Ayant son origine et sa dérivée dans l'Hermite (lame IX) et le Diable (lame XVI) sur le plan spirituel, la douzième arcane majeur du Tarot, tuel, nous présente un Pendu, dont le visage ressemble fort à celui du Bateleur.

Having its origin and its derivative in the Hermite (blade IX) and the Devil (plate XVI) on the spiritual plane, the twelfth major arcane of the Tarot, tuel, presents us with a Hangman, whose face is very like that of the Bateleur.

Un jeune homme est suspendu par un pied à un gilet vert sombre, soutenu par deux arbres jaunes, portant chacun six cicatrices rouges, qui correspondent à des branches coupées, arbres plantés sur deux monticules verts, sur lesquels pousse en outre une feuille une plante à quatre feuilles. Les cheveux et les chaussons du Pendu sont bleus, ainsi que le haut de la veste à demi manches rouges, à basques jaunes, marquées les unes et les autres d'un croissant horizontal, boutonnée par neuf boutons (six au-dessus de la ceinture, trois au-dessous), boutons blancs, comme le col, la ceinture et la partie du vêtement sur laquelle ils sont cousus.

Le Pendu a les mains dans le dos au niveau de la taille et sa jambe droite est repliée de la taille et sa jambe droite au genou. Le Pendu - ou Le Sacrifier ou La Victime - représente; l'expiation subie ou voulue, le renoncement (M. Poisnot); la prudement des dettes, la punition, la haine de la foule et la traitrise (Fr. RoliWheeler); l'esclavage psychique et l'éveil littérateur, les chaines de toutes sortes, les pensées coupables, les remords, le désir de se libérer d'un joug (Tk. Terestchenko); le désintéressement, l'oubli de soi-même. l'apostolat, la philanthropie, les bonnes tenues, l'amour non partagé (Q. Wwirk). Dans un Tarot Français du commencement du XVIIIe siècle, cette lame ne s'appelle pas le Pendu, mais la Prudence, qui est un conseil à donner devant l'ensemble des significations de cet arcane. La douzième maison horoscopique lui correspond en Austrologie.

Au premier regard, cette lame est celle de la défaite et de l'impuissance totale. Pourtant; les bras et les jambes du Pendu dessinent une sorte de croix sur un triangle, signe alchimique de l'accomplissement du Grand Œuvre. C'est assez dire qu'il faut, encore une fois, aller au-delà des apparences. Ce Pendu n'est-il pas victime, d'abord, d'un asservissement magique? La corde, dont les extrémités peuvent faires penser à des petites ailes, ne passe pas réellement autour de son pied et il est permis de se demander comment elle tient réellement. C'est que le Pendu symbolise ici tout homme qui, absorbé une passion, soumis corps et âme à la tyrannie d'une idée ou d'un sentiment, n'a pas conscience de son esclavage.

At first glance, this blade is that of defeat and utter helplessness. However; the arms and legs of the Hangman draw a kind of cross on a triangle, an alchemical sign of the accomplishment of the Great Work. It is because the Hangman symbolizes here any man who, absorbed in a passion, submissive body and soul to the tyranny of an idea or a feeling, is not aware of his slavery.

Tout être humain dominé par une habitude mentale révèle de la lame du Pendu, dit Van Rjinberk, qui ajoute: de même, tout homme dominé par un préjugé moral, contre ou sur quoi que ce soir, appartient à la catégorie des gens non-libres, liés tête en bas au plateau de leurs préjugés (RUT, 242).

Mais le symbolisme du Pendu débouche aussi sur un autre plan. Son inactivité apparente, sa position, indique une soumission absolue qui promet et assure un grand pouvoir occulte ou spirituel: la régénérescence chtonienne. Le Pendu à renoncer à l'exaltation de ses énergies propres il s'efface pour mieux recevoir les influences cosmiques: les douzes marques rouges des branches coupées évoques les signes du zodiaques et surtout, sa tête, entre deux monticules, paraît s'enfoncer dans le sol, qu'ils touchent de ses cheveux bleus couleurs des puissances occultes. Nous songeons ici à Antée, le Géant qui reprenait des forces chaque fois qu'il touchait terre; à la position des yogis dressés sur leur tête et les avant-bras appuyés au sol, pour obtenir une grande concentration intellectuel par une régénération et une circulation de forces de bas en haut entre le ciel et la terre. Le Pendu marque bien la fin d'un cycle, l'homme se renversant pour enfouir sa tête dans la terre, on pourrait dire la tête pensant à la terre dont il fut façonné. Le Pendu est "l'arcane de la restitution finale". Mais cette restitution est la condition de la régénérescence.

But the symbolism of the Hangman also leads to another plane. Its apparent inactivity, its position, indicates an absolute submission which promises and assures a great occult or spiritual power: the chtonian regeneration. The Hangman to give up the exaltation of his own energies is erased to better receive the cosmic influences: the twelve red marks of the cut branches evoke the signs of the zodiac and above all, his head, between two mounds, seems to be sinking into the ground, that they touch of its blue hair colors of the occult powers. Symbole de purification par inversion de l'ordre terrestre, le Pendu est alors le mystique par exelence et c'est en ce douzième arcane majeur celui qui ouvre la série de l'initiation passive, par l'initiation active, fondée sur la culture et le déploiement des énergies que l'individu puisse en lui-même (WINT, 182).
